To escape the pit in the beginning, Ash pulls off his belt and uses it as a whip to grab the chain and pull himself up. The belt would only pull out one way: if he were holding the buckle end. Sure enough, we see the non-buckle end of the belt with the holes in it wrap around the chain. But when it switches to a shot of the belt slipping out of Ash's hand, he is holding the non-buckle end that was previously wrapped around the chain.
