Ashley appears (along with his car) in medieval times due to a vortex, which appeared at the end of Evil Dead Two (which I urge you to check out). We get to see the infamous Necronomicon yet again. Ash is then accused of being one of 'Henry the Red's men, and forced into slavery (which is different from the end of ED 2, but oh well). The village wise man, however, thinks that Ash has been prophesied. This does not prevent him from being thrown in the "pit." After proving himself, Ash works with the local people to try to find a way home. Of course, they won't help him for free. It seems evil has been plaguing the locals and the only way to get rid of them is with the Necronomicon, which coincidentally is the only way Ash can get home. After obtaining the fabled Necronomicon (well, the right one) Ash bungles it up, and manages to release a horde of the undead. Ash is persisting on leaving, abandoning the villagers, until Sheila (his woman) is kidnapped. After an long battle between the "Army of Darkness" is the third in the "Evil Dead" series. The "Evil Dead" series is quite well known by horror-aficionado's and even casual movie fans. The series revolves around Ashley and a cabin in the woods. AoD is set in ancient times, which is a far cry from the first two. Also, AoD goes further away from the scares of the first of the series, and to a less extent, the second (Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 respectively). This one centers on black humor. Nearly every scene contains some smart-ass comments (many of which worked into Duke Nukem 3d and Blood) or some hilarious situations. Another theme from the earlier movies, which is missing, is the demons. There are still demons, but they are much different. Skeletons, flying skeletons, and more skeletons are the basic enemies in AoD. In case you didn't realize it, AoD has a medieval setting. While I wouldn't really compare Evil Dead III to the rest of the series, it is still highly entertaining'deadites' and the humans, Ash gets to go back to the future.
For an Evil Dead flick, the gory is fairly light, not that it doesn't have it's moments. The beginning battle in the pit has some moments, such as a geyser of blood spurting out, and limbs flying up and into the crowd. Most of the deaths in AoD are skeletons being crushed, cracked, and the like. The skeletons are broken in half over knees, burnt to cinders, and more. Some of the stop-motion animation is done very well. There is some great sword-work as well. The sword work is also the main theme of one of the last scenes. And the enemy leader is destroyed in a fitting fiery explosion. While the red wine may be fairly light, the skeletons' deaths make up for it.
The sex is AoD is fairly light. There is basically no nudity in AoD but there are I few close calls. Near Ash's decent for the Necronomicon he gets to make out with the ravishing local beauty. No nudity at all. Much later, the beauty is abducted by the 'Evil Ash' and is raped. The only thing on screen is the top half of her ass. That's about it...not really a strong point, but it didn't need it.
The acting is stupendous in AoD. The premier acting job is by cult favorite Bruce Campbell. His lines are truly amusing, and are performed as such. He strongly fits in the role and the attitude. After his work on the Evil Dead series, Bruce moved on to television on shows such as Hercules. The other actors are strong, but none are as commanding as the lead. The king is emulates the medieval knight role well. The skeletons, while mainly computerized, are hilarious. They stumble around like they've been dead for years, and shoot out one-liners almost as well as Ashley himself.
If you like corny movies, you will love this. Don't get me wrong though, AoD is greatly acted. How shall I say it then... it's so off-the-wall it's corny. That's it. Gore-hounds may complain about the general lack of blood. Sex-fiends will not find anything at all here. If you watch it for the acting / plot, you will enjoy it. And, lastly, if you enjoy anything Bruce Campbell is in, you'll love this.
