Widescreen Review: Picture Quality:
2.5
(5 is the highest rating)
This windowboxed and anamorphically enhanced 1.66:1 version is
the Director's Cut, but is not THX(r)-credited and, strangely, looks very
different when compared to the previously released (THX Digitally
Mastered) Anchor Bay version. The framing is cropped and zoomed-in. The
picture does not well represent an anamorphic DVD, exhibiting slightly
exaggerated colors and lacking definition. We know fans of this movie
exist, and they should be disappointed with the visual quality of this
disc if they were holding out for a Director's Cut.
Sound Quality:
3
(5 is the highest rating)
The Dolby(r) Digital 2.0 matrixed soundtrack is
similar, in terms of overall sonic character, to the THX-digitally
mastered Anchor Bay DVD with re-mastered 5.1-channel Dolby Digital.
However, the latter gets the slight edge for a soundfield that is slightly
better defined in terms of dimension, as well as some bass enhancement via
the .1 LFE channel. This DVD's soundtrack is also not quite as
refined-sounding as the previous Anchor Bay release. It is somewhat
mystifying as to why the re-purposed 5.1 audio was not used for this
offering.
