A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie clichι as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the

5 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion!, November 28, 2001
Reviewer: Seifer (see more about me) from The USA
Warning: Spoilers

Army Of Darkness is the third movie in the Evil Dead series and possibly the last. Whether it's the last or not, it's awesome! The first was a way cool movie, and so was the second, and this didn't disappoint. It's got a pretty good plot that deals with Ash being sent back to the medieval ages where he teams up with Knights to fight Deadites and Skeleton Warriors. Lots of carnage ensues. AOD is not a very scary movie, but it sure is funny at times (like when Ash fights a whole bunch of mini-Evil Ashs') and is so entertaining. Evil Ash was one cool (and nasty) villain and the one-liners are as good as ever ("Good, Bad, I'm The Guy With The Gun") . Plus, the action scenes are so awesome, like the Ash Vs. Pit Deadites and the finale, wow! What a great finale! The ending scene is cool and is a nice way to wrap up this fantastic trilogy. Bruce Campbell turns in yet another terrific performance as Ash and is only rivaled by his performance in Evil Dead 2. Overall Army Of Darkness is simply an awesome movie that's a great way to wrap up the Evil Dead trilogy and will no doubt provide Horror fans and moviegoers alike loads of fun and entertainment. Buy all three movies, Evil Dead is one of the greatest movie trilogies ever and is right up there with Star Wars! --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.

5 out of 5 stars Horror spoofed in a tasteful manner, February 25, 2002
Reviewer: Charles Williams (see more about me) from Knoxville, TN USA
I first watched Army Of Darkness a few months ago on reccomendation from a friend who said to me, "Anyone who isn't in the floor the entire time they're watching this has something wrong with them." The third in the Evil Dead series, this one takes place immediately after Evil Dead II ends. Whisked away into the year 1300, Ash, the hero of the Evil Dead series, must do battle with the forces of the undead to protect the living, as well as the Necronomicon, or "Book of the Dead." After watching it the first time, I disagreed with my friend's analysis. But, after watching it a second time, I found it so funny that I was still quoting dialogue several weeks later. Unlike other horror film spoofs like Scary Movie, which concentrated on jokes concerning a certain part of the male anatomy, Army Of Darkness instead chooses slapstick comedy as the basis for its laughs, as well as a few jabs at classic films like Jason And The Argonauts and The Day The Earth Stood Still. If you like to laugh and you like the "gross factor" that a horror film can provide, then look no further than Army Of Darkness. --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness", September 2, 2002
Reviewer: SharpX13 (see more about me) from Warwick, NY United States
Army of Darkness is probably the funniest/wierdest/coolest movies I have ever seen! Directed & Co-Written by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead Series, Spider-Man, DarkMan) "Army of Darkness" has remained one of my most favorite films of all time. The film has every element of a great movie: Commedy, Action, Rommance, Horror, and a wonderful main character played by Bruce Campbell. This film is technically the third in the "Evil Dead" series although it doesnt require you to have seen the original two. That is always a good thing for a sequel. The story of "Army of Darkness" begins when Ash, a wise-cracking sales clerk from S-Mart accidentally awakens an evil force by reading passages from the Neconomican, also known as "The Book of thw Dead." Bent on getting rid of Ash for good, the evils from the book send Ash back to the Middle Ages along with his '73 Oldsmobile. Now he needs to find a way back to his own time and lead the people around him against the evil Army of Darkness. The music in the film is one of it's strongest assests. Composed by Joseph LoDuca, the scrore pulls you right into the atmosphere of the film. Also Danny Elfman composed the "March of the Dead" theme which adds some variety to the score. One this thats very unique about this film is how many different DVD editions have been released for it. There is the Theatrical Version, The Special Edition (with the original ending), The Director's cut (with 15 minutes of cut footage), and a Bootleg Edition which is the same as the Director's Cut just lower quality. Since the Director's Cut version was limited to only 40,000 copies, its pretty hard to find it anymore. If you are a real Army of Darkness fan I would suggest getting the Theatrical Version and the Bootleg Version. The theatrical version has the ending used in theaters and the Bootleg Edition has the original ending which is much more suitable for the film but not as fun. You can see both endings and all the extra features you can possibly find with these two Editions. So, if you've read this far you're probably pretty interested in this movie so get out there and buy it! ... --This text refers to the DVD edition.

This is the final installment of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. I'll be the first to admit that Evil Dead 1 and 2 are much better, but this movie has a certain charm to it. You have to keep in mind that Raimi and Campbell wanted a throwback to the older adventure movies (like Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans), and that they played up the comedy much more in this movie. Bruce Campbell's performance, is as always, excellent. And while this movie cost more than the other two, it still has that small, cheap look to it. You have to watch it several times to appreciate. The first time just to see it. Then a second to laugh at it and the incredulisness of it (and the continuity problems). And a third time to truly appreciate it. And it is great fun to watch Ash bumble through it all. And since they introduced a level of comedy in Evil Dead II, this movie caps off the trilogy quite well.

It's tough to decide which edtion to get, since there are several editions of the dve. I picked up the 'Official Bootleg Edition' which has the more fitting original ending. The alternate ending (ie, the theatrical ending) isn't included on the dvd under a different heading, which I think is a mistake. Yes, play the movie with the original ending, but under the special features they should have the alternate ending that everyone has seen. There are deleted scenes, with or without commentary, and you can see what has been removed. Most was a good idea to take out, but I really wish that they had kept the windmil/tiny Ash scene to the original length. The commentary by Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi (and later in the commentary co-writer Ivan Raimi shows up) is great. It's informative and you can hear the friendship between these men. Any fan of the Evil Dead movies should have this one, and definitely get an edition with the original ending. --This text refers to the DVD edition.
