Army of Darkness Video Comparison (All Regions)

There has been much in the way of speculation and question about the varying video quality of the numerous releases of Army of Darkness on DVD. In an attempt to allow you to see what has happened with each release, we present to you four screen grabs from the following releases (the pictures are in the same order as they are described here, with a small cover shot for convenience):

  • Official Bootleg Edition R1 (director's cut)
  • Limited Edition R1 (director's cut)
  • THX R1 (theatrical cut)
  • Anchor Bay 2 disc R2 disc 1 (US theatrical cut)
  • Anchor Bay 2 disc R2 disc 2 (director's cut)

If you wish to download the larger images then please click here. They are in JPEG form to reduce the size slightly, but with little compression (15% - Paint Shop Pro 7 JPEG) used. The file is a little over 1Mb in size. You will require WinRAR to uncompress it (you can download WinRAR from here).

As you can see from the above, unfortunately the director's cut versions of the film are quite soft with a lot lighter colouring. Also, some of the print is cropped out for some reason. This would make the theatrical version the way forward with its superior transfer, however you then miss out on the extra footage and the alternative ending. This leaves one option: the R2 Anchor Bay 2 disc since both versions are included, its relatively cheap when compared to the R1 versions which is supposedly the same except the R2 has a DTS-ES 6.1 audio track on the theatrical version. Look for a full review in the next day or two.
