Edits, Bans, Premieres

Because of the difference in the nature of the sequel to its predecessors the level of deleted scenes was significantly less but that didn't stop certain sequences being trimmed for subsequent theatrical and video releases. See below for a list of running times and certificates given in certain countries for EVIL DEAD 2.

In the UK the film suffered only one cut, for its video release, which reduced the film by 1 second

1 cut: A kick to Ash's head from Jake (Dan Hicks) as he lays unconsious on the cabin floor. Scene was restored for the recent cable TV and network screenings of the film in the UK. The cable channels ' Bravo' and 'Sci-fi' along with terrestrial network channel '4' broadcast the film with this scene but not with the two cuts below.

Mentioned by Bruce Campbell in the Laserdisc/DVD audio commentary for the movie

Edited scenes - HEAD CHOP
Note: It's common to hear that the above scene was cut by the censors but it was actually cut out by Raimi himself and was therefore never submitted to as part of the final movie

In America the film was firstly given an X-rating. The films main investor and producer Dino De Laurentiis refused to release an 'X' or unrated film through his own DEG Corporation.

The film was released in selected markets in 1987 and failed to make much of an impact unitl its international video release.

Certificates for the films are as follows:

USA: R rating, initially given an 'X' upon first submission to the MPAA, Motion Picture Association of America
UK: 18, cut by four seconds, including the scene shown on TV
France: 12
Austrailia: R
Sweden: 15
Germany: 18
Finland: Banned

The extend of the edits made to the films in these countries can best be catagorised by their individual running times:

USA: 85 minutes
UK: 85 minutes
Australia: 81 minutes
Germany: 80 minutes
Sweden: 72 minutes - what a massacre! - a full 12 minutes edited for its 15 certificate
