The script for Evil Dead 2 was handled by Sam Raimi and Scott Speigel the latter of who had worked as a Fake Shemp in the original Evil Dead among other things. The original idea Raimi had was for a medieval setting but given the fact the original movie wasn't a huge success the budget wouldn't be able to be met. So, the movie was once again set in the cabin with a minor medieval section at the end of the movie which of course lead onto Army Of Darkness.
The budget for Evil Dead 2 was much larger than that of the original film and so the effects team was more professional and much larger as was the rest of the cast. Head of the effects department was Mark Shostrom who worked with Robert Kurtzman, Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger (now working together in their own effects company KNB Efx Group). Also involved were Mike Trcic, Shannon Shea, Aaron Sims and Bryant Tausek. Each crew person was given a certain character to handle and the whole lot was overlooked by Greg Nicotero to make sure each character's style remained consistent.
Each of the actors, while in their full deadite makeup had to wear prosthetics which included dentures, lenses and tongue appliances.
The lense on the actors were completely white which mean none of them were able to see while playing out theirs scenes and often had to be guided or play the scene several times before getting things right.
While the majority of the special effects crew were new Tom Sullivan returned to handle a number of the effects in Evil Dead 2. He once again designed the book of the dead this time a vast improvement on the one seen in the original movie. Effects also handle by Tom Sullivan were the time warp from the start and end of the movie as well as the final stop motion flying deadite.
While parts of the film were filmed on location at the real cabin in the woods much of it was filmed in a gymnasium of the former J.F. Faison High school which was unfortunately sweltering hot which was a hindrance on much of the cast in particular Ted Raimi who was in a full bodysuit for the part of Possessed Henrietta.
Henrietta's bodysuit was created by Mark Shostrom with two different heads. One, the normal make up on Ted Raimi and the other named the Pee-wee head named after the "Large Marge" sequence in Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The transformation from normal Possessed Henrietta to the Pee-wee version was handled using stop motion effects. The normal suit itself was filled with lentil beans to create a fatty bulge to certain area's of the body.
The Henrietta head that Ash blows away at the end of the movie was actually made up of a mix of bananas, stewed tomatoes, black methocal, rotten peaches and bright green Ultraslime with a fake foot attached both of which were blown to pieces.
Rammo-cam: This was used for when the wind deadite crashes through the windows of Ash's car while it is chasing him near the start of the movie.
Samma-cam: This was the camera effect used when Ash is sent flying through the tree's near the beginning of the film. Bruce was attached to a large cross and was driven down a half mile road tied to it while been spun around and hit by branches. It was filmed at a lower frame rate than usual and so when played normally gave the effect of it been speeded up.
Shakey-cam: The camera effect used for the wind demon flying through the woods. It's basically a camera attached to the front of a motorcycle and driven through the woods.
Possessed Ash eating squirrel: Originally as Possessed Ash was chasing Annie at the end of the film he picked up a squirl and ate it's dead off.
