There were a ton of celebrties today at E3 but none were as important to me to actually meet in the flesh as Bruce Campbell. From Ash in the Evil Dead movies to Brico County Jr. on TV to his current work in Jack of All Trades, Mr. Campbell and his body of work have grown into a true cult icon. Mr. Campbell made a suprise visit to the Nuon-VM Labs booth and lounge on Thursday, signing autographs and giving away copies of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness on DVD. Although he was clearly tired, he never once complained, shaking people's hands and talking as if they were his best friends. It's no wonder that he has a huge fan following. Mr. Campbell was kind enough to submit to a quick Q&A for Stomped @ E3 at the VM Labe lounge. As you will quickly learn, he has strong opinions and is not afraid to say them.
StompedWhen you first started making 8-mm movies with Sam Raini, did you think that your career would be as big as it turned out to be? CampbellWell, we didn't really didn't know the meaning of the word "career". It was more like we just wanted to make a movie. Anything else beyond that would be gravy. The inital goal was to get a film completed, go out and get our investors their money back. Fortunately, the first Evil Dead movie, cheesy as it is, it returned about 10 times their money, and it still giving them checks. StompedNow you are participating in a Evil Dead video game. Did you think that would ever happen? CampbellI don't know. Everybody was wondering about a Part Four, but I think this is a good sort of mid-ground. There might not be a sequel right now, but how about this? StompedWhat exactly are you doing for the game? CampbellI'm just doing the voice StompedYou are not planning on any creative control? CampbellWell, it's not about control. These guys have taken it to its own sort of universe and we have had only a certain amount of time to be involved. Sam and I are both pretty busy these days. StompedAnother game you were involved in, Taychon: The Fringe, has just come out. Are you happy with that work? CampbellI'm extremely happy with it and more importantly it debuted at number 9 so that's what makes me happy. StompedHas Jack of All Trades been renewed for a second season yet? CampbellNot officially, but they are starting to buy New Zealand currency. (The show is filmed in that country.) It's a good omen. StompedIs it hard to work in New Zealand for so long? CampbellIt's not hard to work there but it is hard to work anywhere for six months that is not your home, so we do the best we can. It's a great place to work. The creative enviroment there is terrific. StompedDo you want the show to last four or five years? CampbellWell let's just say five, and let's walk away after that. StompedWhat is your dream project? What is the one project you always wanted to do but haven't done? CampbellDon't have a dream project. Everyone you do is supposed to be your dream project. You make it your dream project. You can't be waiting for that ship to come in. It's already in. You just have to jump on board. StompedYou have a book coming out? CampbellI have a book coming out about a year from now, Spring 2001 through St. Martin's Press. It's about the blue collar side of Hollywood. I'm currently calling it "My Chin Can Hurt People".

Bruce isn't doing the Resident Evil movie. He hasn't been in an Evil Dead movie for 9 years (something like that).
George Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead) is directing the Resident Evil movie... that alone will make the movie kick ass. He literally invented how zombies act and how they die.
