Bruce Campbell flew from his home
away from Hollywood in Oregon to take in the digital
sights at E3 in Los Angeles. The actor best known as Ash
from The Evil Dead trilogy of horror films is back in
action for the second videogame installment by THQ. Evil
Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick, developed by VIS
Entertainment and running on a modified State of
Emergency engine, is a fully 3D virtual sequel to the
film series that will ship for PS2 and Xbox in Q1 2003.
Developed
with the full support of creators Sam Raimi, Robert
Tapert, and Campbell, the team responsible for the first
Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick
unleashes a new horde of Deadites onto the world and
requires Ash to use weapons like his chainsaw, gatling
gun and shotgun to blow away the undead. Campbell, who
will spend ample time in the recording studio to provide
all new dialogue for the game, took some time out from
signing autographs at E3 to talk about the new game, his
film career and the recent success of his pal, Sam
Raimi.
XenGamers: What’s your role with this
latest Evil Dead videogame?
Bruce Campbell:
With A Fistful of Boomstick, my role, besides providing
the voice for Ash, is to make sure we stay true to the
Evil Dead universe. So making sure things like Sam
Raimi's Delta 88 car are in there, and that all of the
right props are in the trunk. Sam’s car has been in
every movie he’s made, including The Quick and the Dead,
and that was a western. He turned the car into a cart in
that movie.
XenGamers: Do you play videogames
in your spare time?
Campbell: I'm not really
the gamer, when I am looking for something to do I work
in my shed. My 14-year-old son is the real test. He lets
me know what we need to have in the games.
XenGamers: So what will Evil Dead fans get in
this new videogame?
Campbell: This game is
the further adventures of the idiot Ash, this time in
post-holocaust Deerborne, Michigan. The quality of
graphics gets so much better every year that this game
is the next Evil Dead movie. People are always asking me
when the next Evil Dead movie is coming out, well,
here’s your sequel right here. The thing I tell all the
fans who want another Evil Dead movie is to get the
games. Theses are the true follow ups and in some ways
they are even better than movies because you can
actually be the character and experience the story for
yourself. With the way technology is advancing and
growing its simply a matter of time before the line
between movies and games disappears. Even now games are
more like movies and movies are being influenced by
games. The tough decision for both film makers and game
designers is how to use these technological advancements
the right way and to not lose sight of the story.
XenGamers:
What do you think of today’s digital technology? What if
you had this back when you were making Evil Dead?
Campbell: If we had the technology today that
young filmmakers have when we making Evil Dead... They
have no excuse. We made our movies on primitive Fred
Flintstone equipment with expensive film. Today, they
have digital cameras and tapes, we’d have made epics
with this stuff.
