This set was created to assemble a number of personally made short film projects, trailers & test footage, from 2014 to 2018, into a physical package. While the majority of this set's contents are publicly available on YouTube (albeit in lower quality), I wanted to create something tangeable I could give to others who may be interested in my previous work or working with me in the future. A two-disc set with identical DVD & Blu-Ray discs was created to give the widest possible viewing experience. You can read about & watch each entry via Youtube, below. They are listed here, and play on each disc in chronological order, oldest first. You can also see a more detailed write-up on each project on This Page.
Who Is This Who Is Coming... (5mins, 2014) This is a short ghost story in the mould of the 1968 BBC Ghost Stories For Christmas episode Whistle And I'll Come To You. It was first film I'd created from start to finish since I'd moved to London in 2002 (having made & worked on a number of films with friends in my teenage years). It was kept very simple with one lead actress and local locations. It served as a test production to work out any kinks before I started making larger scale films, and gave me some hands-on experience with my new equipment; a Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 1080p camcorder with interchangeable Canon 35mm SLR lenses & Zoom H1 microphone. While it works as a short film well enough, much of the exterior footage was over-exposed due to the lack of an external camera LCD monitor, and interior footage too dark as I didn’t own any professional lighting, relying on daylight & lamps.
The Lateness Of The Hour (36mins total, 2015) This is a special effects driven zombie horror short film, and is probably my most ambitious project to date, both in terms of cast & crew members, as well as interior/exterior locations and sets. The original idea, was to keep the zombie element a secret until they are introduced halfway though, starting off as more of a menacing home invasion picture. It took a few months of planning, and eight days to shoot spread over two months. The personally created special effects consisted of a retractable chef's knife, a retractable tyre iron, a reciprocating machete, and various compressed-air bullet hit effects, all 100% physical on-set effects. The title was taken from a Twilight Zone episode of the same name. While there are some elements which don’t really work, overall I'm pretty happy with the result, and it's the film of which I'm most proud.
Book Of The Dead Teasers & Trailers (8mins total, 2016) This project was conceived as an Evil Dead inspired full short film, which involved building sets, make-up & special effects and paying actors. Lacking the personal financial means, I tried crowdfunding the budget using IndieGoGo. I shot the film's intro/credits sequence out of my own pocket to use as a trailer show potential investors. This sequence tells snippets of the story of the 'Book Of The Dead', its discovery and translation at the cabin, skimming over parts of The Evil Dead, leading into to what would have been the start of my short film. It was shot using three actors over four locations using seven mini-sets taking nine weeks. The minimum budget for the full short film would have been around £2000, but less than a quarter of that was raised, so I refunded everyone and took the project partially forward out of my own pocket. I created a second trailer consisting entirely of specially selected shots from the full fanfilm's storyboards. This gave some purpose to the number of props & set-pieces which I had created in the meantime. Some months later, a third/final trailer was created, editing together the two previous trailers, while adding in some new cabin model shots. It's unlikely this project will progress any further due to the large budget needed for it to be fully realised.
Annihilation / The Blackstone Inquiry Trailers (7mins total, 2016) This project was to create a trailer for a Zombie film. It was always conceived to be a standalone trailer, never making the full short film. This allowed me to film all the most exciting parts & little sequences of interesting shots, without the need for long dialogue or connecting scenes. It's made up of recycled & tweaked shots from The Lateness Of The Hour, along with some new footage. It's still unfinished; missing the middle section. There are a number of the more complicated storyboarded shots which have never been realised, which would require a further day or two of filming with around 8-10 actors.
The Locations Of 'A Warning To The Curious' (14mins, 2017) This is a video tour of most of the locations used in the 1972 BBC Ghost Stories For Christmas episode, based on the M. R. James book of the same name, which is a personal favourite. Shot during a four-day June holiday in North Norfolk, the locations stretch across a forty mile section of coastline. Most of the locations were pretty quiet which really helped the desolate & creepy atmosphere. For the most part, the shooting went off without a hitch. The weather ranged from sunny with cloudy blue skies, to suitably heavy dull cloud. I did try to properly compose a number of the shots but for the most part I opted for coverage over quality, sticking with the 28mm lens its wide angle and deep depth of field. The classical music cues played over the footage were lifted directly from the original show, and virtually every single audio effect is dubbed due to wind noise.
If anyone is interested in the higher quality physical Blu-Ray & DVD version, or working with me on projects in the future, please get in touch. I won't be selling this as I've used a few bits & pieces to which I don't own the copyright, but I'm sure a like-for-like trade can be worked out.
