GAMESMASTER S1-7 UPGRADED DVD BOX-SET
Firstly, none of this would have been possible without the help of Jack, Marcus and Adam/MisterToYou, who very kindly trusted me with their many original (and only) VHS tapes. The first version of this DVD set was completed 21/06/10, and was transferred from a set of 25 VHS tapes borrowed from GML user Jack. This original set was completely missing 2 of the 126 total episodes, and a number further little sections here and there. This is the second version, which builds on Jack's footage using 13 VHS tapes from GML user Marcus, and 39 tapes from GML user MisterToYou. This fills in many of the gaps, as well as upgrading the quality of some of the previous episodes, and adding in new extras.
All 126 episodes aired are present, and virtually all bar a few minutes is present on this set, that's more than 50 hours of Gamesmaster over all seven series! 95% of the footage used is taken from VHS tapes, with the missing 5% remaining assembled together using pre-existing DVD MPEG, AVI or MP4 files, but unfortunately there are still some small sections missing. The quality varies over quite a range from perfect DVD quality down to roughly average VHS quality. Each entry below, also has a 'File Notes' label. This details any capturing or encoding issues, such as sections missing, different sources used, or VHS noise breakups. If nothing is listed then you can take it as a given that an episode was captured fully complete using only the VHS source tapes, with no major noise break-ups. There is a quick 'File Notes' colour key;
Green File Notes - means this episode was complete from the various VHS source tapes, and is of decent quality with no problems.
|
Amber File Notes - denotes that this episode was incomplete from the source tapes, but the gap could be filled in from another source such as a pre-existing internet AVI/MP4 file or DVD, this may also detail a complete episode with VHS breakups or noise.
|
Red File Notes - means this episode is incomplete, with no sources available whatsoever to fill the missing section.
|
All the VHS captures have some level of VHS tape audio 'hiss'. It's always trick to know how to play this, I could have processed via an equaliser or filter to try and reduce it, but I know from past experience that this affects everything else in the treble range making all the audio sound 'dulled', so I'm happier just to let it play. As I worked through each series, I edited out a full & complete set of generic intro credits, an outro & intro advert sequence, and end credits, which I could dip in and out of if a captured episode was missing any part. This means that every episode is as 100% complete as it can be with the source material available, and there are no continuity announcements whatsoever.
SERIES 1 BOX-SET
10 SHOWS OVER 2 DISCS (GMFDVD 01.1)
9-1/2 out of the 10 episodes were present on the source VHS tapes, episode 7 (Kendo Nagasaki) only had the show's first half. I've stuck with the VHS tapes wherever possible, but in some places gone with the Challenge TV footage where I had no alternative, and this is mentioned in the file notes. Where Challenge TV footage has been used, the Challenge TV logo has been removed Using a combination of overlay masking and a logo removal filter. While this works flawlessly in some places, in others you may still notice some strange warping effects in the logo area depending on the background, which is due to the filter stretching in the surrounding pixels to cover up the logo. For short sections, these can be tweaked shot by shot to produce much better results, but this is impractical for entire episodes. Short of precicely painting out the logo frame by frame, there is little else that can be done about this.
This series had been captured from VHS tapes of original Channel 4 airings, rather than using copies of the recent Challenge TV repeats. Although the Challenge TV footage is higher in quality than these VHS captures, it has a number of advantages; it doesn't have the red Challenge TV logo in the corner of the screen, nor does it have a continuity announcer over talking all over the end credits, but it does have the Gamesmaster club contact details after the credits which was omitted from the Challenge TV airings.
In it's original 1992 airing, Episode 10's reviews section focused on 'adult' games. When this episode was repeated on Channel 4, then later on Challenge TV, this had been censored and replaced with a generic feature on an ELSPA countdown of the best selling console games since the series began. This was presumably because the 'adult' theme caused a few complaints! As this episode is captured from VHS tapes of that original airing, the reviews section is uncensored and plays in full. The repeat's censored reviews section is included separately as an extra. Another small difference is in episode 3. When this was originally aired, Channel 4 blurred out a Reebok logo on contestants jumper in the last challenge, but this wasn't blurred in the Challenge TV showings. The Gamesmaster Wikipedia entry, the Gamesmaster forum episode list, and the AVI challenge TV rips, all have S1 Episode 9 as having 'Gary Wilson' as the celebrity guest, although this should be the boxer 'Barry McGuigan'. This has been corrected this set.
The advert extras will play in sequence after the Episode 10 Repeat's Censored Reviews Section, but are also individually selectable via the Adverts menu. These come from a range of sources, most were transferred from various VHS tapes in the course of making this set, but some of the rarer pieces of note come from sources such as YouTube and the wider internet. The quality does vary greatly because of this.
SERIES 2 BOX-SET
26 SHOWS OVER 5 DISCS (GMFDVD 02.1)
All 26 episodes are present and complete between Jack's original twenty-five, Marcus's five and MisterToYou's three Series 2 VHS tapes, with no bits missing. fair proportion of the episodes from those various VHS tapes had at least some portion of the end credits cut off. From episode 14 onwards, virtually every end credits had the GM fanclub details or other such information and most with an individual Dominik voice-over. These have been saved where either the credits run in full on the source VHS tapes, or can be seamlessly edited together with other episodes to make them complete. This means that technically every single episode isn't totally complete as per the original airings, but to all intents and purposes they're all play as full episodes without anything missing. I have only noted this below, where the repaired credits would be 'moderately' different from the originally aired version.
Each box-set comes with a pair of free red/green 3D glasses for use with Episodes 18 (Ulrika Jonsson) & 19 (Vic Reeves). The 3D game in Episode 19 (Vic Reeves) looks OK, but being from a VHS source the picture quality isn't perfect causing some colour bleeding which doesn't help. Please note that the stereoscopic 3D effect only works with the red lens over the left eye and the green over the right.
The advert & promo extras play in sequence in the order listed below, and are included for additional nostalgia factor. It is also possible to play each episode alone via the Select Episode menu. These come from a range of sources, most were transferred from various VHS tapes in the course of making this set, but some of the rarer pieces of note come from sources such as YouTube and the wider internet. The quality does vary greatly because of this.

18 SHOWS OVER 3 DISCS (GMFDVD 05.1)
15 out of 18 episodes present on the source VHS tapes, Episode 16 (Mr Motivator), Episode 17 (Stewart Lee & Richard Herring), and Episode 18 (Janick Gers), were all completely missing from the set, and replaced with DVD MPEGS very kindly supplied by Al/GMLive (specifically for this purpose) from his eariler transfers.
Al/GMLive's MPEGS are marginally lower in quality than my captures, plus my episodes' intro credits, advert break, and end credits all play in full without any continuety annoucements, whereas the some on the DVD MPEGS are truncated in places. Additionally, all the sound on my captures (while still having that VHS 'hiss') is clearer & sharper. This is pesumably because the DVD MPEGS' audio was processed via an equaliser to remove that same VHS hiss, which also reduced everything else in the treble range making all the audio sound 'dulled'.
Other than the missing episodes, there were some other little bits missing too, here is the full list;

SERIES 6 BOX-SET
18 SHOWS OVER 3 DISCS (GMFDVD 06.1)
16 out of 18 episodes present on the source VHS tapes, Episodes 7 (Chris Armstrong) and 10 (Zoë Ball) were both completely missing from the set, and replaced with DVD MPEGS very kindly supplied by Al/GMLive (specifically for this purpose) from his eariler transfers.
Given that Al/GMLive's MPEGS are marginally higher in quality than my captures, it would seem an logical option to use those in full instead of mine. With the issues he's had in the past around people pirating & selling his DVDs on Ebay, and his subsiquent reluctance to share his DVDs with anyone, it would really be for him to re-release his set. I have kept their use on my set to an absolute minimum, so regardless of what happens to my DVD set down the line, I don't put him back in the same position again.
On the flip side; My episodes' intro credits, advert break, and end credits all play in full without any continuety annoucements, whereas the some on the DVD MPEGS are truncated in places. Additionally, all the sound on my captures (while still having that VHS 'hiss') is clearer & sharper.
