Yeah, it's been noticed. Some people still consider them all horror though(yeah, I'm looking at you Blockbuster!)

Dude I used to work for the 'buster. Bunch of morons. Oceans 11 in drama and oceans 12 in comedy.

And Mindhunters in ACTION!? It's a thriller (and quite a fun film too!)

I hate blockbuster with a passion ever since those bastards tried to charge me for a movie I supposedly tried to return without the case. They got the movie but said the case was not there yet they wanted to charge me for the whole movie. I put my card in the trash can and walked out after that and never looked back.

Never understood people who laugh their way through ED1, then again some people really
like rollercoasters and put their arms in the air and some people cling on for dear life praying
for a quick death if it comes. (I'm the 2nd type although its worth noting I was 12 the last
time I was on a rollercoaster).

Then there are people like that one kid that tried to jump up and grab someones leg on the Batman ride at Six Flags and got decapitated. If you ask me that would have been pretty damn horrific.

i noticed that and kinda pisses me off because it should be horror all the wat through. can you imagine how awsome the other two movie would be if they were straight up horror

Like I said, Ash would be a whimp and would have died at the end of Evil Dead. If not it'd be the Halloween series with pointless twists and turns condensed into three installments. Laurie is dead! Laurie is alive! Michael is dead! Michael is alive! Laurie is dead again! Thats just me being sarcastic but I really don't see the Evil Dead without that homerun hitting comedy element that edges it's way into the series. Without AoD we wouldn't have famous phrases like, "This is my boomstick!", "Come get some." or "Yo, Shebitch."  Believe me, I see where your coming from because it obvious that it has roots as a horror film but the sequels gave us comedy and kick ass lines to put on T-shirts.

Yeah, I think the the movie's genre change is based upon Ash. He turns out to be a cocky hero in Army of Darkness so he makes more jokes and one-liners  so the movie becomes a comedy/action.

What you'd have is another great single film raped into a neverending series of sequels who's quality declines by a large margine every installment, a good example being Halloween. If it had been all horror, chances are Ash wouldn't have made it out of Evil Dead 2 and it would be just like many other horror series, back where it started from by the time the end of the movie comes around so the formula can be repeated for the next seven sequels with no variation.

Once again, Within the Woods isn't technically part of the series. It does not follow any of the storylines set up in The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, or Army of Darkness. It was just a short film that Sam made to get funding for The Evil Dead. I have yet to watch it but from what I've heard it even has sort of a different plot than Evil Dead. According to IMDB none of the characters from Evil Dead are even in the film because each actor's character name is they're first name. So yeah, not really part of the series.  As far as I know that was 100% horror as well.

I was just going over this with a buddy of mine.

And everybody here is right, it goes with the progressive changes
in Ash's character. Basically, he gets more ballsy, and becomes a
smart ass.

That's why I can't decide which is my favourite... they're all totally
different movies. Evil Dead I definatley made me jump, and Army of
Darkness made me crack up. I think that's why I am more apt to
watched Evil Dead II - best of both worlds.

As a small aside, Bubba Ho-Tep is on tonight and it's described as an 'Imaginative Sci-fi romp.'

Sci-fi? It's being shown on the sci-fi channel certainly but the channel does not make the genre of the film. I'd accept it as fantasy, since Supernatural Horror has a strong fantasy element, but certainly not sci-fi.

Anyhow, back to the thread, yep, definitely a greater leaning towards the comedy side as we progress through the series. There are certainly horror aspects within Army of Darkness though. Particularly the first part of the film right up to the Windmill scene (inclusive) I'd say. (Obviously with lots of humor as well. What I mean is, it felt very much like the second film in tone.)

The whole battle at the end with the Army of the Dead felt very different though. Mainly due to the humanizing of the Deadites I think. (I.e in the first two films, and the start of Army, they're demons in human bodies. Demonic doppelgangers of their former self. The army of the dead just seemed like dead guys to me, and not particularly scary... although they looked great.)

I think the second was my favourite, as I loved the balance between horror and comedy. (Again I loved the start of Army too.) If they do an ED4 I hope they take it back to that tone and don't go even further into the comedy side. I LOVE the comedy, don't get me wrong, but it should be the twisted humor of the other films.

 Evil Dead 4 should be sorta like A Fistful of Boomstick. Ash being one of few survivors in Dearborn battling with the evil which has infected the entire city a la Dawn of the Dead. Leave out the shopping mall element. Very overplayed. It should feature the comedy of Army of Darkness and the blood and horror of Evil Dead 2. I think they should use the plot of "Boomstick" without the new monsters and no more time travel.

That would be a decent version.  I was hoping they'd go with the Director's cut ending, ("I slept too long!"), i.e. we had fantasy in Army, now let's have sci-fi) but I imagine they'd go with the Smart ending. I hope they don't just have them all stuck in one place though. I remember reading something along the lines that Ash would be stuck in one of those Drive side shopping places (or it could have been the smart again. If that takes up part of the film, fair enough, but I hope it wouldn't take up an entire thing as we we've had that before in the first two films. The tone of ED2, but with something new, in other words.

The Dearborn idea would be interesting though.  (Loved Fistful of Boomstick by the way. When ED:Regeneration came out, all those before were deemed "crap" in reviews, but I thought that was a disservice to Boomstick.)

I haven't played that one. Read about it though. Needing to find oil for the ol' chainsaw does seem a bit much for one thing.

Abolutely! Both had something different to offer, but both worked well. It'd be great if a sequel game were brought out soon but I won't hold my breath.

I don't mind CGI if it's done right, but in this case I agree. Deadites=people in prosthetics is the way to go. Bigger monsters.... people and physical effects if possible, CGI as a back up.  Swirly stuff (i.e. portals, magic effects etc), CGI.
