As this is my 100th post, I thought I'd make it an interesting one.

With the end on EvilDeadChainsaws.com, I've been thinking of what to do with the huge workshed
display sitting in my workshop. I settled on the idea of moving it into the front room of my house
to display my own cabin chainsaw, although having thought it through I came to the conclusion
that having an 8ft x 8ft x 4ft deep monolith to evil dead sitting next to my sofa might be a little
excessive. So I decided to convert the background into a much smaller display instead as a pet
project.

Below are some photos showing the process I went through & how I got on.

This is the stripped down original display. I took everything off, then dismantled the table
& base.

Until I was left with just the back wall. I then cut this back from about 8ft x 4ft down to
4ft x 3ft & touched up the paintwork.

I added some legs to it so it could be freestanding, although I might fix it up onto a wall
at some point instead. The legs are slightly excessive but at least there is no chance of
it falling over!

I wanted to keep as many of the little touches from the original as possible, the chains
& hooks being one. I really didn't want to have an overhead bar on which to hang the
lightbulb & chains so I had to put a little thought into this. The paintcan was then filled
with stones to counterweight the chain handing on the pully. The pully was made from
sheet plastic & some drainpipe glued together and painted up.

From the front you cannot see that the pully is attached to the paintcan and just looks
like its hanging in mid air.

The lightbulb wire is threaded through a piece of brass tubing and then down the back
of the display to a plug socket. The brass tube is fixed to the lid of the paintcan to
hold it in place and a piece of thread runs from the bottom of the electical cable to
the paintcan to hold the thick cable round at a 90 degree angle. The rope bundle on
top of the paintcan helps to hide the wire & tubing. You can see that the shelf has
started to droop somewhat, This is because it was only ever supported from the other
end and the wood had warped over time. I decided just to leave this as it was.

The fully dressed display. From the front the lightbulb & wire, as the pully, seem to
be suspended in mid air. I also carried over alot of the dressing from the old display
although I had to move some things around, and added alot of dust, dirt & rusty
bolts/nuts/screws/nails to complete the display.

The finished & lit display. The bulb & oil lamp are both lit.

A full length view of the lit display.

Well, with the workshed display now gone from my workshop, I just have one more order
for EDTM to get finished off and all the moulds and other related bit & pieces will be boxed
up & stored. EDC has been an interesting experience, having made chainsaws for Evil Dead:
The Musical, I don't think when I started up I could have expected to get any higher up the
ladder (especially with no ED4 on the horizon!). Still sorry to see it go, but I'm looking
forward to moving onto new things and I'm sure there'll be new evil dead projects from me
in the future.

Dear-sweet-lord-almighty!!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

That is a gorgeous display and a particularly brilliant peice of engineering!

I bow, humbly, to your superior prop making ability fine sir.

Perhaps one day, should you come out of EDC retirement, I can order one to go with the rest of my AoD props.

Any chance you can list some of the goodies that are on that baby? chain, jars, lantern, etc... Did you actually find things that were similar to that in the ED workshed, or did you just random stuff that had the same feel? ... or both lol?

How big is that bad boy? Do you have some guessimated dimensions or perhaps what size plywood you used? Also is there any chance you could go into detail about the pulley, that's such a great idea and I'm thinking about making a replica workshed at my lake house... somewhere for me to relax, ponder and vice my girlfriend's severed head.... you know the usual.

Thanks in advance! Looks sweet!

The original large version of this display as show on EvilDeadChainsaws.com is a
little more accurate than this one as I have to make afew concessions to scale
the display down while keeping some of the elements in the 'frame'.

The 2 main sources I worked from for the original large display was ED2 itself and
'the gore the merrier' which has some of greg nicotero's BTS footage in it and
some of that is of the workshed set. I really did put alot of work into the workshed
background to make it as exact as possible although it would have been easy just
to knock something together and most people wouldn't have known any better.

I started out from the screengrabs going through finding anything in each frame
which I already knew or could fairly accurately guess the size of (stuff like a
hammer, saw, wine bottle, etc..) then used the sizes I knew to scale up other
things until I had accurate measurements for everything I needed. I then tried
to find decent matches to all the props across the screenshots, then just filled
out the rest of the space you dont see in the film but would see in my display
(either because it was too dark or out of the film frame) with anything that looked
'right' like old paint cans, odd tools, plant pots, etc.. things that wouldn't look out
of place. Most of the stuff is placed & proportioned in the shot fairly accurately, like
the position of the chains, lightbulb, jars under the shelf, bottles on the table & the
vice (took me a while to find this model vice too!). I then just dressed everything in
with lots of dust, dirt & rusty nails/screws/etc. I made the pully just as a quick little
gag to make the display work, if i was doing it properly like you I'd try to buy a real
old one off ebay or somewhere and age it properly.

From my measurements the workshed is made from 10" wide rough sawn pine (I
used 1" thick just to make it easier to work with but if you want to build a
freestanding & loadbearing workshed you'll need to go thicker than that). The table
wall & shelves are all made in this, although some of the table is also made of 3" x 1"
rough sawn pine too. The thicker frame timber (the crosspiece & upright on the back
wall) are rough sawn 4" x 4" pine.

I have a notebook full of planning notes & measurements which is too much to write
out here, but if your serious about building this I'd be happy to email stuff over to you.

Heya,

Thanks for the information, I sorta explained what I was doing a little incoherently... I actually have a cabin on my property (not an evil dead style one, I think if I tried to replicate something that big I would lose my significant other), but I do have a guest cabin that is pretty much empty... and half of it is my workshed. I'm just thinking about making a faux wall like your original design and sticking it in... Something that looks awesome, but is kinda pratical (or so I'll tell people Tongue).

It'll look a little out of place since the rest of the cabin is finished with drywall and has a bunch of bright red tool chests and holders, but HEY... it'll make it look more rustic Cheesy

Is there any chance you could send me some of the notes and measurements? You could scan them if you don't want to write them down Tongue

thanks so much for all the info though,
- your friendly neighbourhood Westcroft

P.S.
In case I decide to replicate the pulley, you said you used sheet plastic and a drain pipe? I'm guessing you cut two circles out of the plastic and then glued them on the drain pipe, but what kind of drain pipe did you use?

EDIT: oops my e-mail is El_superunknown@hotmail.com
