I noticed that earlier today...  I have been thinking about making my own cut.

I'v actually done it and it works perfectly!
It does end up being a 4+ hour movie though- and it barely fits only a single double sided DVD with no menu animation, music, or chapters.
We had an Evil Dead night and most people couldn't tell when the movie changed over to the next one!

Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness blend seemlessy, I had some difficulty a few years ago getting Evil Dead  and Dead by Dawn to blend together (only had a video system to edit the 2 together), I also remember Sam and Bruce talking about editing all 3 together on the Army of Darkness commentary.

the points for editing the first two is right at the end of the first one where it goes through the front door from the inside and into Bruce's mouth. Theres a black frame right when it gets into the mouth and before it zooms back out. Cut there to ED2 where the same thing happens.. so when it zooms out, we're not about 15 minutes into ED2...everyones already dead and he's by himself... continuity works good too! The only bug is that the film quality is so different from 1 to 2.
The ED2 to AOD cut is much less noticably as far as film quality and lighting goes.
Th eperfect cut is right after he's gone through the time tunnel/space/wierdness... it flashes very brightly a couple times before he fall out of the sky. Theres a couple frames where its completely white and theres no music. Now cut into AOD right after the flashbacks where the same thing happens..screen goes completely white and then he falls to the ground.
Perfects cuts!
Thats how sequels should work.

I've been wanting to do this for while, with the following:

-Include both AoD endings by using the S-Mart ending as a dream sequence while Ash is asleep.
-Include deleted scenes.
-Include a narration about the Necronomicon at the beginning (either the ED2 one or the AoD one).
-Possibly include the ending of ED2 before the AoD transition.

The only real challenge that I see is with including the beginning of Evil Dead 2. It makes sense to just jumped right into it when the camera zooms to Ash's mouth. But then you miss out on the Ash vs Linda parts - including Ash getting his hand bitten which is essential for later on.  Any ideas on how that footage might be able to be included?

Cool, the very same idea occurred to me last time Riami made mention of still wanting to do an ED4.  I imagined that after Ash woke up from his S-Mart dream the original ending would play out and after Ash screams "I slept too long!" it would cut to black, then "15 Years Later" would fade onto the screen, then off again.

From there the story would pick up with a new set of characters who are being pursued by the unseen force which along the way possesses one of the group members transforming him/her into a particularly nasty deadite creature.  They might make some mention of Ash as either some sort of folk hero or as a crazy hermit who thinks he's from the past, in any case the creature finally makes its move on the group and at the very last moment our reluctant hero Ash comes out of nowhere to kick some deadite ass as only he can.  It is soon revealed that he has an alterior motive for saving them (food/ammo/they're on his turf/one of them is an attractive woman).

Basically from there the story would continue with the now older Ash, still sporting his crazy beard, explaining to them (and the audience) how he has learned to survive in a post apocalyptic deadite infested future world and that he does not normally engage the deadites and spends most of his time in hiding.  At some point later on in the film Ash would finally get his sense of purpose back, shave the beard, suit-up & gear-up in the usual ED/AoD montage we have come to expect.

That's about as far as I got.  Anyhoo, back on topic...

Well I am finished with editting my copy.. Here is how mine went..

  • ED2 Necronomicon intro starts it off.
  • Moves into ED1 just after title.
  • After Ash leaves the cabin in ED1, goes straight into ED2 force camera going through the woods and cabin to Ash.
  • ED2 and AOD transition is at the white flashes ending in explosion and Ash/car falling in AOD.

I really wanted to add in both endings with one being a dream, like mentioned before, but I couldn't really get it to look right imo. I am currently working on a custom menu.

Now here is where I think a fun (yet true geek) way of thinking kicks in.. I have thought about editting select movies together or just editting movies to make a different feel to them. This is where I introduce....

The Joda Collection....

Now I know what you're thinking... The Joda Collection, really great original name!!! Well it isn't original.. Since I am a fan of The Criterion Collection, I wanted to make my own!! Haha!!! I am not crazy, just really geeky!
