Well Warner Bros. is going with Blu-Ray exclusively... Is this finally going to be the start of the Blu-Ray dictatorship? I am still DVD only, but I promised myself to not upgrade until there is a definate winner.

I do  think Blu-Ray will take over in the HD, Blu-Ray battle.  The thing is though, I don't think this whole HI-Def thing is taking off or doing nearly as well as it was intended to do.  Here is my take on this.  VHS to DVD was a  huge change and one that consumers were willing to spend the cash and switch over to.  This is not the case though with HI-Def from regular DVDs.  Personally speaking, I have spent a lot of cash on my DVD collection and the switch just to have a bit more of a crisp picture quality is not enough for me to get a brand new Hi Def DVD player and replace my DVDs.  From what I have read, many others (including myself) are perfectly happy to stick to our regular DVDs.  I'm willing to upgrade if it comes down to it, but HI-Def is just not enough for me to make the switch.  At this point, I'll continue to buy regular DVDs and continue to expand my horror collection.  Besides, for the price of a single Hi-Def DVD, we can buy nearly 2 regular DVDs.

Curious what you feel on the subject Joda and others as well.  Thanks for posting the thread, this is a interesting topic.

I wish I waited, however watching Planet Earth on HD DVD was amazing! Now I need to rebuy the damn thing on Blu-ray.

A word to the wise, pick up all the HD DVDs you can, they're a bargain now... When you go for a Blu-ray player (because they won), get the Bluray/HDDVD player so you can watch both... they're equal quality, and you don't need to shell out $40 for a movie.

I have a HD TV and I am still going to buy regular DVDs, got way to many to make the change now, also I dont see the point because a few years down the line they will only release something else which is better and you will have to make the change again.

Yeah I heard this high def battle was just a stall while they ironed out the kinks in making digital distribution the next big thing... that's going to suck, because when we don't have hard copies of our movies I bet there's going to be many cases of something going wrong with the download and when we try to restart it, it'll charge us again.

I've already seen cards you buy at Best Buy and Future Shop that look like credit cards but it has album art on it, you buy em for a little less than the regular CD and then you download the album at home. Also when I picked up I Am Legend on DVD it had a code inside to download a digital version, I'm sure we're going to see that more as it's most likely an attempt to ease the transition... soon will seem just the codes for sale.

This blows because I loved the Special Edition packaging and am a supporter of Steelbook cases. I guess now I'll just be collected the little cards with the pretty picture.

I wish they'd just make one type so you'd never have to buy something new every 10 years !!!
But I love DVDs and i'm hoping they will stay for a long while mainly because I've spent so dame much on them already.

You aren't alone. But no one is telling you to replace the titles you already own. Upconverting features are pretty good. If you haven't watched a bluray or HD-DVD on a hd tv, you are missing out. Watch Planet Earth or King Kong.

Yeah. I've got a some-what-medium sized collection (about 200) and that's like around $3000 considering most of my collection is made up of $20-$10 movies and all this aquired mostly in the past two to three years. I'm not ready to switch over yet, that mainly because of my DVDs and the $400 and up to $1000 price tags. Once they go down to a solid $200 and they're library of season sets expands and prices on media goes down, I'll think about it. I've never cared about all this HD stuff. I can see the movie, looks pretty neat, thats all I need.

Planet Earth is so amazing, especially in High Def. C'mon who can get tired of watching that shark chase the seal... or those crazy dogs chase that llama camel thing that had to jump into the river to survive.

man, I miss my HD DVDs
