Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.
The trio will create a new franchise based on A Nightmare on Elm Street, the 1984 Wes Craven film.
Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."
The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for Friday the 13th, a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").
Variety erroneously states Cloverfield's Odette Yustman will star in "Friday." We have confirmed the actress is instead appearing in the David Goyer untitled supernatural project produced by Platinum.
New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=4423While that may sound cool to remake/sequel fans like me... Here is some news that sounds almost as bad as no Bruce Campbell in a new Evil Dead....Robert Englund's term as Freddy Krueger may have come to end.
Platinum Dunes and New Line rocked the horror world last week when the production entities announced they were working together to overhaul the "Nightmare on Elm Street" brand (full story here). A number of industry sources recently phoned in to shed some light on the early discussions going on behind-the-scenes regarding "Nightmare"...and none of them include Englund starring as Krueger.
The franchise facelift includes discovering a new actor to polish up the finger knives and play the iconographic dream role Englund has practically made his second skin since '84.
Disheartening news for the fans, maybe, but rumor has it Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is taking "Nightmare" back to square one...as in fresh start, hitting the reset button, making it their own (think "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" '03 and Friday the 13th '09). Because of this decision, they'd like to find another actor to carry the new Krueger into future films.
Again, early talks. Script-wise, nothing can be sealed up until the WGA strike meets an end...and it sounds like that may be sooner than later.http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=4483

This wang's chung.
All the horror icons except for Pinhead and Freddy have been played by multiple actors. Anybody could play those other guys but nobody can out Freddy Robert Englund. The only hope I'd have is that they would make the film darker and more horrific but given the track record of Michael Bay produced horror remakes I guess that won't happen.
At least it'll be a Nightmare film I could take my kids to see.

I'm not a big fan of shot by shot remakes, like the psycho remake. No point to that one as its added nothing new over the original version. I think movie execs will do whatever it takes to make money, making any film ever made fair game especially if that film already has a cult following on which to base it on. They know with a remake they'll be taking less of a risk as the can see how the original is doing whereas an original film is a far riskier investment. The only thing that will stop them is if the onslaught of remakes stops making money. I thought the TCM remakes were ok... just ok... nothing special, just another one of the summer blockbusters for that year and in 30 years time people will still be talking about the original when these remakes have been long forgotten. I do think that It would be interesting to see a new NES if they take it back to the roots of a sadistic killer rather than the witty characature that developed over the later films.
I suppose the moral of the tale is if you dont like remakes, dont see them. if the execs start losing money on them they'll drop the idea and move swiftly on to the next big thing.

By now I know everyone knows I am a sequel/remake fanatic. Evildeadchainsaws is saying the same as me, don't see it if you don't want to. Some like remakes. But, sometimes a certain actor is the only person that should be allowed to play a character.

I am in agreement too. I see remakes purely for the entertainment value and simple curiosity.Sometimes it's interesting to see what choices will be made and how they would redo scenes today. I was a staunch critic of the Dawn Of The Dead remake but like most I actually enjoyed the film and went on to buy it and have watched it several times since. In fact, DOTD is quite different than the original save for zombies and a shopping mall so i would see it as more a "re-telling" than a remake.
Which is why I was kinda looking forward to an Evil Dead re-telling. Same Cabin, Same book, different universe. I have a bunch of ideas myself on how it should be done. But for most people I was alone in this want.
I also watched the first 5 minutes of Epic Movie and the trailer for Meet The Spartans for the same curiosity. But it was all too much.

Well after Scarlett Johansson wanted to go nude in The Island and Michael Bay said no I had one big reason.
And Jessica Alba saying she would be more than willing to strip for Sin City? That's right Rodriguez YOU'RE NEXT!

They could. But they WANTED to go nude and the directors in question said no. I sound like a 13 year old boy! "I WANNA SEE BOOBIES"
