Indy Mogul just released a how to for a wearable chainsaw hand with no dangerous parts. http://www.indymogul.com/backyard-fx/episode/BFX_20080114Tell me what you think. Now keep in mind, it does NOT equal "Evil Dead Chainsaws" props by any stretch of the imagination, but if you need a chainsaw prop for super cheap, this is your vid.

Cool for the cheap. My guess is it could be done for quite a bit cheaper. If you had the resources, and some dumb luck. I got so much crap lying around that it would be nothing. Not sure if thats good or not.  Grin

I may try to top this later. I gotta boomstick to make first though.

The ones I make cost roughly $30... depending on how much I can get a broken Homelite XL for on eBay.
My parts list is usually about this:

1 broken Homelite XL
1 sheet of thin steel or aluminum for the top
1 pipe coupler (similar to the one in the video actually)
various angle brackets to attach the clamp to the saw
1 pair of BBQ tongs for the handle
couple small pieces of plywood and/or 1/4" plexiglas (perspex)
The trickiest part is that little aluminum grill on the left side.
I think they used a gas cap back in the day, I just make mine out of wood
Cut a circle thats about 2 3/4" wide by about 1", round the top edge, cut slots, prime and paint

All in all..its usually between $30 - $40 to build with pretty ordinary tools.

Good point. I think when they made this, they were trying to be safe and not use any chainsaw parts.
