I saw this movie last year at a horror film festival in London FrightFest. I am probably the biggest fan of this movie. To Simply put it, this film is Awesome. This is the kind of slasher film we've been missing for 20 years such as the Friday the 13ths and Nightmare on Elm Streets as well as it combining the sort of character development that Scream has. It's by far the best horror film I've seen this decade by no exaggeration. Not only is it structured like a classic slasher film with a creepy back story, it is also well thought out in it's suspense, tension, misdirection, jumps, gore, inventive kills, COMEDY, with many characters that you care about so that you can invest yourself in their terror when the shit hits the fan and Victor Crowley (played by KANE HODDER) is chasing them through a dark swamp.  Robert Englund and Tony Todd are also in it and have great performances. John Carl Buechler did the effects... there is no CGI gore at all.

The tone of this film is not at all serious and is nothing like the torture craze of the likes of Hostel or the Saw movies. I personally came out of Hatchet thinking that a huge hole was filled and I felt like I could say what it felt like to see a classic like Nightmare on Elm Street or The Evil Dead for the first time in theaters. This movie was so fun that the whole audience were cheering at the creative kills, laughing at the intentional comedy, and some were screaming at the jumps. I've never seen anything like it before. This is why this could truly spawn a new horror icon as the original writer said that if this is a success he will make a part 2. Therefore the tone is like Evil Dead 2 but is still quite scary.

As far as VILLAIN goes, VICTOR CROWLEY embodies the movements of sack head Jason from part 2, with the craziness of Leatherface. He runs, fast and will tear you apart with his hands and/or his hatchet. The only thing he doesn't do is wait around to stalk his victims or walk slowly, however there are plenty of suspenseful and tension building scenes that are down to wondering when he will appear to scare the shit out of you. He is kind of undead and has a similar appearance to Jason, however he is nothing like the undead Jason we know. He is Hyper. It's almost impossible to believe that Kane Hodder would act so differently then Jason but somehow he created original characteristics in a killer

The Second biggest reason to see this film in theaters is that it can decrease he amount of remakes. Firstly don't watch any remakes whatsoever unless it's something big, but rather, support independent original films like this one because if this movie is a success opening weekend, the people of Hollywood (that are apparently watching this film to see how it does) just may stop green lighting remakes and will say enough is enough, we should be making original R rated horror as our audience will go see it. The fans are the ones that can control what happens because if they get behind this movie it will be a success. If they don't and watch remakes then that is all they will get. So nobody on this board can complain about remakes if they still support them by watching them because if they do keep bitching they are hypocrites. This whole remake bullshit happens because the fans still pay to see these movies. If you like these movies then fine. But if you hate these remakes then STOP watching them and support the original stuff. Sure Hatchet is not the most original film ever made but neither is Evil Dead, but what makes them different is that they are not a sequel, not a remake and not based on a Japanese one.

If you want to see a film as funny as Evil Dead 2 then watch it when it is coming out this Friday September 7th in limited theaters... (it was lucky to get that far) DO NOT wait for it to come out on DVD as this film is the sort of film that should be watched with an audience in the theater- basically a popcorn movie. If these theaters are filled up to an average of 65% or more, Hatchet will be given a wider release to theaters all across the country and will truly have a better chance of success. This film is very significant and could change the sh*t we're in right now. Tell everyone you know about this movie and try to make sure they see it. this is what I've done. And believe me if there was a movie to get behind and listen to the hype it's this one. This film hasn't got a single bad review, has won many awards and has huge fan support by word of mouth. Spread the word like I did and everyone can experience with you the possible beginnings of Victor Crowley as our new villain. Cool

If you still think all I said was a load of cr*p then fine, but don't bitch about The Evil Dead remake or any other remake that will eventually come out because you would have allowed it to happen. And come on if this movie sucked I wouldn't have written at least 1000 words telling you how good I thought it was and I'm not getting paid for it. You will do the same after you've seen this classic.

Thanks for reading. Spread the word.

I know that people can have their opinion that remakes suck, and Im glad we have the ability to say so. But in no way does a remake hurt the original. If you do not want a remake, then simply do not go see it, but let others enjoy them. I enjoy remakes, nothing wrong with a modern version of a great and amazing film. Sure a lot of remakes suck, but a lot actually are superior to the original. For example, Night of the Living Dead I felt the remake was tons better.

Yes not everything is original, but not everything has to be.  If anything, remakes actually help the original. Some people may enjoy the remake so much that they want to go back and enjoy the original, therefore bringing a new audience to classics.  So stop trying to persuade people from banning remakes, cause some us enjoy them.

I never said that remakes hurted the original versions, I was saying that remakes are affecting the current state of horror to such a point that it's damaging it and when we look back at this decade there won't be much good stuff to pick out like the other decades. This decade of horror (in my opinion) is worse then the 1990's because at least then we had Candyman, Scream, I know what you did last summer, and The Blair Witch Project they were big successes in the mainstream and most  were good movies. But now we just have a swarm of generic crap that rips something else off so much that they can't be a success because the mainstream audience wants to see something new and original- that is why Scream and the Blair Witch Project were a success- because they were for the most part original and stood out at that time. And yes Hatchet isn't completely original, but in comparison to what's happening now, it's a refreshing change.

And I never meant to say that EVERYBODY should boycott remakes (I worded that sentence badly), I was mainly referring to the hypocritical people that bitch about remakes but still go to see them to fulfill their curiosity but then come out of it pissed.- you can't deny this happens most of the time and it's just a waste of money, time, and will only secure the next remake of a classic.

I haven't paid to see a remake since The Omen 666 came out, I didn't pay to see the Halloween re-if*ckingmaging/ remake as I don't want to help put money into the things I'm against as it gives out the wrong message to me. Halloween if anything reminded me why I hate remakes.

And btw I agree with you on the Night of the Living dead remake which I do prefer over the original, but I still like the original.

I still dislike 90% of remakes I've ever seen and if it seems like I'm ordering people it's not intentional, it's meant to be a suggested solution to the frustrated people who can chose to do listen to it or not. It's just that many people want remakes to stop, and I'm just telling them how they can stop them.

Ok so 90's is better because it has Candyman, Scream, and I know What You Did Last Summer but 00's sucks because we are seeing modernization of great films? Ok, how is it hurting when these remakes are being great successes? Just because you and other fans of classics aren't willing to accept these films when millions of people enjoy them? Now don't say these millions of people aren't "real" fans or anything just because they don't mind remakes.

Respect my opinion, I dislike 90% of horror remakes, and I don't care if they are popular or not, or if you disagree or the mainstream public disagree with me. Besides the remakes weren't doing very well this year (The Hitcher, Black Christmas) until the Halloween remake raked in so much money but I put this down to it's title Halloween (the most famous title in the horror genre), the curious fans of the original franchise as well as fans of Rob Zombie's music- no matter if it's a good film or not, it was guaranteed success on those factors. And if you want to compare success, then Scream and the Blair witch project made a much bigger profit. All I can say is that most people I know (some weren't horror fans) came out of the theater and said they hated RZ's Halloween. Same goes for the other times the fans came out of other horror remakes that they bitched about. But they made a mistake in paying to see it cos it pissed them off afterwards. I was like them once but I think I only saw 2 bad remakes in the theater.

Saying that these remakes are a huge success is an exaggeration. Although it's also true to say that they are not complete box office failures. The majority of mainstream teenagers will watch any horror film that is marketed to them, and this doesn't really confirm that the movie is good.

And the reason why horror fans still go see them is because like you said, they are re-works of classics, so curiosity gets the better of them. In the previous decades people went to a film because they heard it was really good- a legitimate reason to judge it as a good film, not because Hollywood got the best of their fan boy curiosity through title alone. This is ultimately why horror fans still see them. And come out hating it, but their friend will still see it just to see the modernized version of it. Not because they think it's going to be scary and awesome.

And non horror fans will watch any horror film no matter what it is.

The problem with The Hitcher and Black Christmas all came down to one problem, marketing. How many tv spots did you see for them? They didn't show many trailers in theaters... And the trailers they did show were done very poorly. Now, Halloween remake had great marketing and great trailers, same with Blair Witch. You know it is easy to say Blair Witch was a bigger success when its budget was only $660,000.  Lets take Saw for example, besides the fact that they are imo pretty good movies, they have great marketing. They are huge successes because they don't cost a lot to make and rake in a lot of money.

Now I know a lot (notice I did not say all) of the people who complain about these remakes don't see them. Whether it be that past remakes have sucked or they feel these remakes are trying to erase the original from existence, which obviously is impossible.

Now don't get me wrong, I respect everyone's opinion as I hope everyone repsects mine. But theres the problem, people are trying to force (not saying you are) their opinion that these movies are crap and people listen to them.
