Retail R1 NTSC DVD cover artwork
This was a project to edit a score for Alan J. Pakula's 1974 conspiracy film,
The Parallax View, a film which has long been a great favourite of mine. The film's excellent score by Michael Small had not been commercially released up to the point at which I had completed this project, although one specific track from the film could be found on a rare compilation CD of Michael's work. As of April 2010, 'Film Score Monthly' released this score in full along with another previously unreleased film score by the same composer on CD (Vol. 13 No. 5 / UPN: 6-3855-80285-2-0 / see direct website link
here) It containins both
The Parallax View as well as the later 1976 John Schlesinger film
Marathon Man as a 3000 piece limited edition release. This new set makes now my score somewhat redundent, but at the time, I had spent a good few years on the looking for for a score, and finally decided to create something myself, which I could also share with other likeminded fans.
Using the retail R1 American DVD AC3 audio track as a source, I edited 12 tracks which ran a total of 21 minutes 6 seconds. Some tracks were simple to edit such as the montage sequence or the end credits as they played 'cleanly' from start to finish. For others, I had to piece parts of the score together using Reaper (an audio multi sequencing program), removing as much of the speech and sound effects as I could. I tried to achieve a happy medium between getting the cleanest audio and seamlessly editing each of the parts together, while still keeping each track as long as possible. Some parts still have some sound light sound effects such as footsteps, but nothing too distracting. I have also left in both inquiry speeches, one from the beginning of the film, and the other from the end, as simply, I really like them. No CD covers or disc artwork was ever made for this project, as it was only even intended to be listened to as an MP3 album. Since posting this on a promenant soundtrack forum I have had a fair number of requests for copies and some great feedback, although only distribuing it on the basis that the recipient owns the retail DVD.
Since completing this project, 'Film Score Monthly' released a double bill soundtrack CD containing full scores to both
Marathon Man and
The Parallax View, which you can view and order
