This was a graphic design project to design a DVD cover for the 2005/2006 two part documentary
Ban The Sadist Videos. This excellent insight into the UK history of so-called 'video nasties', and their national pillory during the 80's & 90's by campaign groups and the press, has only ever been available as part of other box sets. The 2005 Anchor Bay 'Box Of The Banned' Volume 1 DVD seven disc DVD box set contained part one, along with heavily censored versions of a number of notable horror films including;
I Spit On Your Grave,
Zombie Flesh Eaters,
The Driller Killer,
The Evil Dead,
Last House On The Left and
Nightmares In A Damaged Brain. The 2006 'Box Of The Banned' Volume 2 six disc DVD box set contained part two (which came with
Fear, Panic & Censorship, a similar documentary on the same disc), along with more heavily censored films;
Evilspeak,
Contamination,
Tenebrae,
Don't Go Near The Park and
The Witch Who Came From The Sea.
As I object to paying to own censored versions of films which are available elsewhere fully uncut, but still wanted to legally obtain copies of both parts one & two (as opposed to downloading pirated copies), I had to buy both box sets, remove those discs, and recover some of my outlay by selling each box on as 'incomplete'. Having done this I was left with only the two discs themselves, so had to design a new DVD cover to go with them. I used GIMP (an excellent & better freeware alternative to Adobe Photoshop) to design the cover as a 3231px by 2176px image at 300dpi. The logos & layout concept was primarily based on the original DVD box sets, but was significantly re-arranged & adapted into a standalone release, and to what I though an official cover by Anchor Bay might have looked like.
