Throughout
the past few years the gaming culture has gone beyond what it was
originally intended for. Suddenly the kids aren't the only gameplayers
companies are concerned about, mature gamers are responsible for
a sizeable portion of the market aswell. The number one influence
on games has been the movies and the Evil Dead trilogy is no exception.
In the eighties a version of the Evil Dead existed for the Commodore
64 gaming system and of course there's the THQ games Hail
to the King
and Fistful of Boomstick. With its
witty one-liners and darkly comic charcter set-pieces Raimi's trilogy
has in its own way shaped the wise cracking superhero of the shoot-em
up games industry. The EVIL DEAD games and the C64 version are discussed
in furtehr detail in The Game
section above.
As
mentioned above there's no doubt Army of Darkness has influenced
many aspects of gaming and gaming culture. The two handed action
of first person classic DOOM for an
example (chainsaw anyone?) which has subsequently led to various
'patches' and executable files which allow elements of the movie
to be adopted by the characters and scenarios. Even The Sims has
an Ash patch: Source: deadites.net
last but not least....
The
Duke Nukem thing:
Duke Nukem was a game that took the first person shoot em up genre,
as popularised by the Doom games, and added one-liners and dry wit.
Most of this dry wit came from Army of Darkness and the cool drawl
of Bruce Campbell. "Hail to the King, baby!" and "Come
get some!" soon became the signature of the Nukem series. Here's
how Campbell labelled the shameless thieves that plagerised the
movie, "...SOME CHEEZEBALL SHEMP RIPPIN'
OFF THE MIGHTY WORDS OF MR. RAIMI...". Ouch!
Although
this section is not exhaustive it is only meant to take a glimpse
at the world shaped by the Evil Dead trilogy, its influence on the
current crop of film-makers is obvious (Cabin Fever, Donnie Darko)
and gaming is no exception purely because Campbell's Ash is the
ultimate wise-cracking hero: a John McClane for the undead.
